About Townapedia
Townapedia is a free travel guide to American towns, run by NEMICO. Each town page is built from open data and lists where every fact came from. A page is published only when we have enough real, specific information about the town; until then the town has no page.
Where the information comes from
- U.S. Census Bureau (public domain): places, counties and ZIP code areas (Gazetteer files), and population, income, housing, age, education and commuting figures from the American Community Survey 5-year estimates. Estimates have margins of error, larger for small towns.
- OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0): restaurants, cafes, lodging, parks, churches, shops, gas and EV charging, schools, libraries, healthcare, airports and map tiles.
- Wikidata (CC0): founding dates, elevation, time zones, official websites, and landmarks, museums and places on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0): the overview and history text, quoted with a link to the article and the version used.
- Wikimedia Commons and Mapillary: photos, each shown with its author and licence.
- National Weather Service (public domain): current conditions, the 7-day forecast and alerts. NOAA NCEI (public domain): U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020.
- AirNow, USGS, OpenFEMA, National Park Service and NCES (all public domain): air quality, earthquakes, disaster declarations, national parks and public schools.
- INDB: local news headlines, linked to the original stories. YouTube: a few videos, which load only when you press play.
Townapedia does not use paid business listings or invented reviews. Reviews, tips and photos come from members signed in with a NEMICO account and are checked before they appear. Drive times are estimates from distance, not routes.
Corrections
Something wrong or missing? Use the contact page or the link at the bottom of any town page. Many facts come from OpenStreetMap and Wikidata, which anyone can improve; changes there reach Townapedia on the next update.
