History

The name Jorhat is derived from the Assamese words "Jor" (two) and "Hat" (market), referring to the historic markets of Macharhat and Chowkihat, which were located on opposite banks of the Bhogdoi River. In 1794, Ahom king Gaurinath Singha established Jorhat as the fifth and last capital of the Ahom Kingdom after the Moamaria rebels occupied Rangpur. Jorhat remained the capital of the Ahom kingdom until the British occupation of Assam in 1826. The city is known for its Ahom-period heritage, including the historical Rajamaidam, Lachit Borphukan's Maidam, Captain Gohain's Maidam, Rajmao Pukhuri, Mithapukhuri, Burhi Goshani Dewalaya, Hatigarh Dewalaya, Bibudhi Garh, and Borbheti, which reflect its importance during the late Ahom period.
