History
Seoni was founded in 1774 by Diwan Muhammad Amin Khan, who moved his administrative headquaters here from nearby Chhapara. Following the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818, the town came under British rule as the heaquarters of Seoni district in the Central Provinces, and its municipality was formed in 1867. By 1901, the town had a population of 11,884 and served as a local commercial center on the road between Nagpur, and Jabalpur.
