History

Haldwani developed in the Bhabar region at the southern foot of the Kumaon Himalayas. Before the establishment of the modern town, several older villages in the Chhakhata Bhabar were inhabited since the period of the Chand dynasty of the Kingdom of Kumaon. Subsequently there was migration of people from the Ramgarh hills into the plains and led to the establishment of the settlements like Mukhani, "the two Haldwanis" (Choti Haldwani and Main Haldwani) and Kusumkhera. The region came under the dominion of Kumaon, when King Gyan Chand of Chand Dynasty visited Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century. Later, the Mughals tried to take over the hills, but their attempts received a setback due to the difficult terrain.

In the early 1600s, the Haldwani region was sparsely populated. It was inhabited by people of a Native tribe known as the Buksa.
