History
The place now known as Thakurgaon was historically recorded as "Nishchintapur", and 16th century Kochbihar mapping places Nishchintapur on the east bank of the Tangon River and Thakurgaon on the west.
According to local tradition, the new name derives from a Chakraborty family residence known as Thakurbari, which lent its name to the locality.
A British-period police outpost (thana) named Thakurgaon was established in the early nineteenth century and was later relocated east of the river.
The area was constituted as Thakurgaon Subdivision in 1860 and was elevated to district status on 1 February 1984.
