History

The port was known as Siraf in ancient times. At the time of the Silk Road, most of the commerce towards Asia was performed through Siraf. Several episodes of massive earthquakes and tsunamis damaged and drowned much of the port city, where its ancient quays, moorages, administrative structures, and even boat remains are found today on the sea floor of the Persian Gulf via marine archaeology.
